TCF Resident Card (CR) Authorised Exam Center
Since January 1rst, 2019, the Stralang Institute has been one of the approved test centers for the TCF Resident Card (CR). Applicants must provide proof of their oral and written proficiency in French at level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) to obtain their resident cards.

Public: any foreigner under the age of 65 requesting for the first time the issuance of a long-term resident card (valid for 10 years) or a card marked “long-term resident – EU”
The TCF for the resident card in France will meet the new provisions introduced by the French Ministry of the Interior (Decree No. 2016-1456 of October 28, 2016 and Order of February 21, 2018) setting at level A2 (comprehension and oral and written expression) the level required in French for applicants for obtaining the long-term resident card.
The French authorities also recognize the following certificates and diplomas of a minimum A2 level:
- TCF general public (TCF TP) including compulsory written and oral expression tests;
- TCF for Quebec (must include oral comprehension, written comprehension, oral expression and written expression tests);
- DELF A2, B1, B2 or DALF C1, C2 (all versions).
How does the TCF CR exam work?
The “TCF CR resident card” includes four compulsory tests:
- Listening (20 questions): during 15 minutes.
- Reading (20 questions): during 20 minutes.
- Writing (3 tasks): during 30 minutes.
- Test conditions: common examination room.
Oral expression (3 tasks)
During : 10-15 minutes.
Test conditions: an individual interview with an examiner. You will be informed of the date and location after the oral comprehension examination. The date and time will be decided within the week following the first examination, depending on the number of candidates and on the examiner’s availability.
Total duration of the exam TCF CR : 1h15
You can appear as many times as you wish at the “TCF CR”. You must, however, wait one month between each TCF pass, whatever the declination concerned.
How long will it take to get my certificate and where should I collect it?
Your results will be sent to the test center within 20 days (excluding weekends and holidays) from the date of receipt of the session material at the CIEP. You will have to collect your certificate directly in the center where you will have passed the “TCF CR” tests.
How long is my “TCF resident card” certificate valid?
Your certificate has a validity period limited to two years.
Is there any way to be exempt from taking the “TCF CR”?
Exemptions are provided for in the circular of February 26, 2018 (NOR: INTV1804752J). In accordance with this text, exemption from taking a language test can be granted by the prefecture for:
- a diploma attesting a level of French superior or equal to the Vbis level (according to the nomenclature of diplomas), i.e. the French certificate of general education, the CAP or the BEP;
- people holding a minimum A2 level French language diploma (DELF, DU, DCL)
- people over 65.
Please note: people who apply for a renewal of a residence permit do not need to present a language level certificate.
If you think you can benefit from an exemption, please contact the prefecture services directly. Only the prefecture services are empowered to issue an exemption.
How much is it?
The test costs €150, to be paid by bank transfer, check or cash to the Institute.
